my Penitent review

Penitent by Dan Abnett

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It’s taken me the better part of a year and a half to read this book but not because of what’s in the book but because I don’t want to wait another nine years for Pandemonium.

BUT! I decided to re-read and finish the book this month and finally place the hardback on my shelf for a while with pride. What a ride! This novel is a perfect continuation of the Bequin trilogy, the third trilogy of the Eisenhorn saga. This journey is worth the time investment and this novel is no simple bridge. Dan Abnett is an awe-inspiring author with an incredible command of words. Like a magician, he brings every scene to life with jaw dropping detail that completely immerses you in the scene. Beta has absolutely grown on me in this novel as she now has more urgency in her own choices. I say this because the first book she is really a victim of circumstance but now you see her evolve into her own person pulled from two justifiable powers at odds with eachother, that being Eisenhorn (the all-time GOAT) and Ravenor (A coffin with a beautiful mind).

I can’t begin to describe how awesome it is to read a scene and have a minor callback to the Eisenhorn or Ravenor trilogy. Like, I got to see a flashback of the Thracian Primaris incident. If you only read the Bequin trilogy, it is a beautiful and dreamy scene, but if you take the time to read the first two trilogies, this scene in particular means so much more especially due to the outcome of Ravenor. The depth is incredible and Dan Abnett honors your time with his passion for the story and the characters, let alone the expert and precise twists and reveals. I literally gasped at the end of the last five chapters disturbing my coworkers in our downtime because the reveals were table-flipping. What a great addition to the journey and I cannot wait to have Pandemonium in my hands. For me, this is a 10/10.

A science-fiction and western tale, The Rise of Devils is full of whizzing bullets, dastard lies, and snarling undead. Each sinful devil must decide who is trustworthy and who is expendable. Despite the cruelties they commit that blur the lines of humanity, they know that their reprehensible actions will determine their ultimate fate, no matter the cost.

Kindly leave a review as that is the only way I can achieve more visibility for these stories! Thank you!

I have a publisher!!!

It’s about time!

I have finally found what I think will be my author home for the foreseeable future! The publisher is Xulon Press and with this company I’m hoping to give my novel the best shot possible for success. I will be posting the release date for The Rise of Devils but the timeframe is late April or early May.

The package with Xulon Press includes marketing, pre-orders, book trailer, and audiobook so there is a lot to look forward to with this project and I’m so happy to have you on board for this journey!

The Rise of Devils Cover Art!!

…for a Hunter of the Rose, the sound of gunshots in the distance is like a gator that caught the taste of wounded prey. It’s the call for a feeding frenzy.

-Glen Rio Proverb

Finally, the time has come to reveal the chosen cover art for The Rise of Devils! This has been a long and twisting road to travel, but I am relieved that the end is in sight. As of now, the release date is Spring 2024 (I hope). Within the following weeks I will be posting more updates, but I am pleased to announce the positive reception I have received from Beta and professional editors. It has been the most positive responses I have read and I am over the moon to get this novel into your hands.

The Rise of Devils is a full-length western novel with sci-fi tones sprinkled throughout, and is part 1 of a scheduled 3 or more part series. Follow and sub to keep in the loop once the first novel is released.

Artwork courtesy of Emilio C. Rodriguez. I have worked with this guy for the previous two novels and I am proud to have him on this project as well! His talent is pure genius.

Rise of Devils set for 2024 release!!

The initial concept of the Rise of Devils

Firstly, as many of you know I have been hard at work editing my sci-fi western The Rise of Devils for the better part of a year. We’re in the final stages of editing and the publisher is going to be Dorrance Publishing. They offer standard publication services along with audiobook options which is probably the most attractive aspect of the package. I am of the belief that most books are consumed via audiobook so my novel has a better chance of finding an audience.

Secondly, and most excitedly the cover art has been finalized! I worked again with the artist Emilio C. Rodriguez who did the artwork of my previous two novels. He has outdone himself yet again and I am proud to display his art on my novel. I will be posting the cover art December 16th. Stay tuned!

New Song by J.M. Faupel!

One of my favorite artists just released the track titled Ashes today and it’s a banger! American Alternative rock artist J. M. Faupel delves deep into the thin line between chaos and rebirth in his forthcoming single, “Ashes,” a powerful and moving song about crisis and hope.

This poignant, synth-driven track resonates with the spirit of bands like Linkin Park, Starset, and Chevelle. Reflecting on the metaphorical process of a phoenix burning down to ashes before its rebirth, “Ashes” paints a vivid picture of internal turmoil and the chaotic journey from despair to hope.

The Story Continues Before It Has Begun

Though I have been silent I have not been idle. My novel The Rise of Devils has had a few editing setbacks but I’m on track for a 2024 release! In the mean time I have begun writing it’s sequel The Glen Rio Rush. Here’s my idea board on the novel and it’s always so much fun to make! I can’t wait for this one to be complete and start the beta editing process!! (Note: I do not own any (except for one) of these pictures and they’re only for personal inspiration only)

Change of book title?

Chapter 2 – If I Had a Bullet

I’ve been writing the Rise of Devils for over a year and a half now and I’ve never really considered a different title until I realized all my titles have three words in them. Knights without Kings, The Twin Princes, Rise of Devils, The Silent Satellite, the Cosmic Castaway. I had a hearty laugh when I came to that realization so, in order to break up the monotony, I’m changing The Rise of Devils to Beastface. It’s named after a system in the video game Hunt:Showdown (the game that is a heavy inspiration for the novel) in which having this perk reduces aggression you receive from creatures and undead. What do you think of the title? Let me know if it’s worse or better than the Rise of Devils.
